angel trumpet

I live in Area 7 of NC and have an Angel Trumpet planted outside (for 3 years) and this year it bloomed for the 1st time. Past several years I have cut back to the ground and mulched it for the winter. I know this plant should be in a container and carried in for the winter; but many people around here just cut it back and mulch. I recently read that an angel plant only blooms above the "Y" and I can see that is what it has done. Can anyone tell me if it will not freeze out if I don't cut it back & mulch. I'm asking this because I would like for it to start blooming sooner as it might if it does not have to grow up from the point where I have cut it back.

The odds of you winning against Mother Nature 100% of the time is slim. Plant Zone 9 and you are in 7 so be glad when it blooms or pot it up. Unless you have an enlcosed courtyard with afternoon sun you might test fate and succeed.
