What is an acceptable way to dispose of large numbers of black walnuts falling to the ground?

I take the green shells off and dry them and eat them all winter. I use whats left in th compost!

I knew a man who had a lot of walnuts and a gravel drive leading to his house. In the fall he would pave his driveway with walnuts and let the cars do the shelling.
I saw several posts on the local Freecycle where people were giving walnuts away.
