Help with my arborvitae trimming

Help! I just bought a house and the arborvitaes around the house are about 18 feet tall. I'm trying to cut them down in size before winter so they don't freeze and loose branches. Do I just chop the top off or is there something more involved that I should be doing? Thanks so much.

You could but then they's look ugly all winter. If there was someway you could wire then together then cut them back in ths spring that would be better. Remember they peel like a banana.
