Species and Disease Identification

Mon Aug 01, 2011 10:57 pm

Hello everyone. It's my first post here and I hope this is the right place for my problem and that someone can help me out with a few things.

The other day I was walking down the street and I came across a plant that had been placed on the curb to be thrown away. It was likely in someone's office up until that point but that's just a guess really. The plant looked to be in rough shape but I decided to try and save it.

First off, the pot it was in was way to small. It was an 8 or 9 inch pot for a 3 and a half foot tall plant. So, I started by transplanting it to a much larger pot. Not suprisingly, it was pretty root bound so I tried to sperate the roots somewhat with out damaging them. As I was transplanting it I noticed a few spots of what appears to be a fuzzy white mold or fungus on the outside of the root ball. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take pictures before filling the new pot in with soil.

Also, almost all the leaves have a spotty discoloration on them that seems to be spreading. When I first took the plant home, there were a few healthy leaves but now even those appear to be getting the spots.

I am asking for help on a few things. First off, can someone identify the plant species for me? I doubt it's anything super rare or exotic, I just don't know what it is. Secondly, can someone help me figure out what's causing the leaf discoloration? Last, if anyone has any ideas what it was I saw on the roots and how to treat it, that would be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide. I want to give this guy a second life but I'm afraid I don't know the best way to go about it. I added some pictures to this post to help with my requests. Please let me know if anyone would like some different pictures and/or more information. Thanks again!

Don't have a clue but it is a house plant and you must be careful if you have others plants because whatever you have could spread. It is cheaper to go to Wally World and but a fresh plant for $10-15.
