Ladies and Gents
I have an old japanese maple in front of my house that has started to lose some bark. Underneath the wood is being turned into saw dust. It went from ok looking to holy junk in a few days

Unfortunatly this has just appeared over the past few days. I am sure it has been happening underneath for a lot longer, we just now can see it
What can I do to save the tree??? I would love some suggestions

Hello mdcmn7. Ken here in the Chicago area. The trunk of your tree doesn't look good.
What is happening up in the canopy? Are the leaves turning yellow or brown? Are some
of the upper branches dying back? See if you can find any insect that is doing this to the tree
and capture it. It may take going out at night with a flashlight. Take it and your photo to your local
arboretum for identification. Good luck and keep us posted.

I think the offending bug is an ant. I was able to find a whole bunch of them running around when I went out there with a flashiligt last night
At the moment the canopy looks fine. The branches and leaves all look normal. However, I have noticed that more of the bark on the trunk of the tree looks like it wants to peel off.
I found some pesticide at my local home center that claims it will work for ants on trees and have been spraying it as directed. I am always hoping for the best
Thankfully if it has to come down, it is in a postion that I can do it safely myself
