spirea vanhouttei 'renaissance'

I planted this shrub in a horrible spot. too close to road. takes a beating from winter plows and winter road elements.

I tried to propagate it by doing a couple of cuttings, but, had no luck. my question is, can I just dig up a "chunk" of this shrub and plant it elsewhere? in other words, I guess I would be dividing it.

I'm rather surprised that the cuttings didn't work for you. Did you use softwood cuttings? They should be taken in May, June, or July, and the bottom half stripped of all leaves. Then, dip the cut ends in rooting hormone and insert into the growing medium. (I like to use plain sand or perlite for that.) Cover with a plastic dome to prevent the cuttings from drying out, and place in bright indirect light, I.e. no direct sunlight. Softwood cuttings usually root fairly quickly.

Indeed, spirea can be propagated by root division, but you should wait until the plant is fully dormant in the fall, before you dig it up.

Here are a couple of links that might be useful to you in your project:
