Help with Pyrostegia Venusta - golden trumpet - please!!

Quick background:

My Pyrostegia Venusta is not growing well and I'm not sure what the culprit is. I know it's supposed to grow fast, but it hasnt been. The leaves are folding in half (see picture) and there are two things that I can think of that are causing this problem. I'm either over-watering / under-watering, or the plant next to it is smothering it (see pictures)...

Quick background
I am currently living in the desert, Beer Sheva, Israel where the daily temperatures are reaching 90+F and will soon reach 100+F on a daily basis. I have the plant set up on a drip system every other day. Today I (unfortunately) ripped out the plant that was growing with it in the hopes that it was stunting it's growth. However, I'm not sure why the folded and wilting leaves. I don't know if im giving too much water or too little or what to do to propogate faster growth... Please let me know your thoughts...

Just an observation but it looks a bit crowded which could mean the other plants are taking away moisture and there does not seem to be a huge amount of soil. But I am not certain.
