Is My Little Gem Magnolia Okay?

I bought this magnolia spring of last year. It blooms beautifully and smells wonderful. I just feel like the leaves seem a little sparse. It just doesnt look full like others Ive seen. Also, last fall a deer rubbed his antlers on it and snapped a bunch of branches off. Are they gonna grow back? Is "Maggy" okay?

Also: This is the second magnolia Ive planted in this very spot. The first one was cut down to the ground by a deers antlers. I planted this bigger one thinking it would be stronger but he still got a hold of it. I cant afford a fence...how can I prevent this from happening again?

It does seem sparse but it could be just the plant's DNA. Wouldn't worry.

You said no fence, but what about just a fence circle large enough to protect the tree for a couple more years?

Yours looks like the full-sized trees with those leathery leaves (glossy on upper side, downy brown on the other, right?) so it may not be the same, but my dwarf magnolia (with more tender leaves) gets mildew in early summer. I can keep the leaves from turning grey, the tree becoming weakened, and then losing leaves due to annual summer drought by regularly (weekly) spraying with the 10% Milk Solution.
