Dwarf Alberta Spruce Spiral Topiary

I have a 1 foot tall Dwarf Alberta Spruce that I intend to turn into a Spiral Topiary. Having never done this before, I need to know how soon I can begin the cutting and shaping. I have found some resources with information about how to create one, but I don't know how soon I can begin. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi MoLock,

The best time to prune spruce is in May and June. Not sure it would make much difference with what you plan to do though. Take a look at the calendar here.

the best time of the year to prune evergreens is in the spring while the weather is still cooler. this allows the plant to produce new growth that will cover the pruning marks for the rest of the season. to keep a plant at a certain size you have to prune it every year.
