winterizing magnolia trees

My husband built a wooden structure to cover our 5 foot magnolia tree for the winter. It completely covers the tree. Will blocking out sunlight compelely harm the tree?

Generally speaking, yes. Without sunlight the tree will not be able to photsynthesize and make sugars (which is feeds on). But, if the tree still recieves partial sun, it may be okay. If you know what type of tree it is, you could research to find if it does well in partial sun.
