High winds have caused this damage to a tree in the back garden. (see pic).

The section on the right is the top of the tree.
Question is what to do with it, my girlfriend is upset and worried that this the end for the tree.
Can the damaged section be cut off and will the tree carry on where it left off afterwards?

Hi Alex,
Your tree looks like an ash. Anyway, that break doesn't look salvagable. You would have to prune it so as to establish a new leader and that's alot of missing bark to heal over. Take a look at these sites for help in determining what to do about a storm damaged tree.
