how to train morus alba?

Hi

I want to grow a morus alba (white mulberry) tree and want to train it into a bush as I can't have it growing to its full height potential. I remember seeing one for sale awhile back in a garden centre and it had been trained into an umbrella shape. It was probably about 1.5 metres in height. This is what I'd want my tree to look like but I'm unsure how to go about training it into this umbrella shape. I would have thought weighting down the stems would be how to do it but I'm no gardener so could be way off. Can anyone help/explain the best way to do this?

Thanks

I've seen a lot of great websites on the net on training trees, try a google search.

Does anyone have any experience with Mulberry?

Try a Morus alba 'Pendula', this one you don't have to train, it has a natural weeping formation on top of the trunk and doesn't grow too tall, 15-20 feet high and wide.

Hi Phate,

Great idea from Janet and probably the best idea. Also a good website from Sharon. Scroll down to the pruning section for helpful info there.

This site explains how to prune shrubs into a tree shape and might also be helpful.
