Yellow flowering tree

I know this sounds silly, but awhile back I purchased a small tree, it only stands about 4-5 feet, has yellow flowers that look a bit similar to a daisy, but not entirely. I thought I had saved the tag so I could identify it, but to my dismay didn't. I purchased it from a Home Depot in Salt Lake City, Utah. I remember that they had other plants like it but the were growing crazy (as in several "sticks" were growing all at once as opposed the the tree like one I had picked), compared to the nicely groomed one I had purchased, I believe that it can get bigger as long as I cut it correctly. It said not to water it often, and once the flowers die I've just been cutting them off. But now I don't know what I've down wrong, all the leaves from the bottom up are going brown, what the heck did I do?

Is it possible for you to post a photo? Quite often it is easier to assist when we can see it. Thanks!
