What is this Italian fruit??

Since I just made this photo my avatar, I guess I should find out what it is. I took the picture in Tuscany late last summer. They were on a small tree (about 10' tall or so) They're about 1" diameter and were pretty hard, but maybe just not ripe yet. Any ideas??

They reminded me of Kornus Cousa, but the fruit structure... well, and the leaves... oh and the bark too... are ALL wrong

It looks like an arbutus, or strawberry tree. They grow very well where I live. The fruit is edible, but supposedly mealy.

Right you are, Sweet Thunder. I didn't taste one while I was there...too bad. Thanks for the ID!
