Help! Whats eating my tree?

Just bought this house and this tree seems to have branches dropping off of it. The pictures below show what some look like. There are tiny ants on the tree which i cant photograph then there are larger ones like in the last picture.
Any help on identifying them and on getting rid of them is appreciated!

Could it be carpenter ants?

I can't see the bug very clearly, and you don't say where in the world you're located. I think mansgirl is probably right, though. If you're in the southern U.S., you might look at the Florida Carpenter Ant as the culprit.

In other parts of the country (California for one), borers of many varieties will cause damage like this.
