New tree spacing from old stump

I'm planning to plant two filberts. One of the spots I want to use has a couple of stumps nearby (a madrone, I think, which was cut down over a year ago, plus a holly and a cherry that were cut just recently).

How far away should I plant the new tree to give the roots enough room? I don't have a ton of space to play with, but at least two or three feet.

2-3 feet isn't a lot depending how old the trees were that you cut down but why don't you start digging where you think you want to plant the new trees and see what you run into. You should have an axe and pick axe handy. Don't try to shoe horn in the new tress though make sure you give them plenty of room because eventually the old roots will decompose which is about 5 years.

Thanks! I guess I'll have to get digging and see what I can see...
