large chestnut needs pruning

I have a old chestnut tree (male and female) I need to prun the top out of. The trees are 15/20 year old when can prun or can I?

Why do you want to prune it back? Unless it is shading a spot I'd leave it alone but that said fall or winter would be the ideal time.

What do you mean by "prune the top out of"? Are you talking about selective thinning or something more radical? Why?

If you want to take twenty feet off the top you might as well just cut down entirely. Removing twenty feet will rapidly accelerate the eventual death of the tree and also make it more dangerous in the interim in terms of dropped branches.
