Red Maple help

This tree needs help. 3 feet up from the ground you can see that rot or wound . Theres only a 2.5 inch part of the tree that feeds the top.
As you can see theres a bottom tree that wants to take over.

Where or when should I cut the tree to let the new bottom takeover? The large root system should make it grow fast.

Ouch! That looks painful!
If you want it as a tree, you'll have to train a strong leader up using a support, and cut off other growth, but I think the remaining thick trunk at the bottom might look a bit strange. If it were mine, I'd cut it hark back almost to the ground, and grow it as a multistemmed tree.

Sould read 'cut it hard back' not 'hark back'. :oops:
