There are a lot of differences between JRMs. I don't know of a website but an excellent book that tells you practically EVERYTHING about them is by JD Vertrees. Anything from lacy droopy varieties to the dwarfs - all depends upon what you are looking for. :)

The best thing you can do is go to a local nursery and get the permanent staff to give you the run down on what they have.

I ordered a japanese maple from eastwood nursery last spring. Very pleased mailed on Monday as they always do and I received on Tuesday. Plant very healthy and well packaged. There are a lot of types of japanese maples. Mounting and upright are the two big divisions. But size can vary from 2 feet to close to 40 feet at maturity and leaf types, colors of all kinds. Anyhow, I think you will find their website interesting. They are in Va near W. Va line and I am in Pa so I don't expect you will get one day delivery via old standard UPS ground as I did. However, they are one of few nurseries I found anywhere close to NE. Most are in NW with a few in the deep South. Link.

Jack, the site you recommended is rated well with Garden Watchdog. They trade as Eastwoods Nurseries Japanese Maples. (Note the 's' at the end of Eastwoods.)

Here's Garden Watchdog's home page. You can search by company name, zip code or even by plant material.

There are others in the east as well. I did a search for Japanese maples at Garden Watchdog and came up with this list. I noticed there's one in Pennsylvania and one in New Jersey, both rated well.

Nichols Maple Nursery explained to me that there are thousands of different varieties of Japanese maples. Apparently they even have over 200 varieties. I bought a Acer Japonicum 'Maikujaku' from them and a Acer Palmatum 'Kiyohime' two years ago and they are doing well. I don't think Nichols sale online, but I think they might be doing it in the future. Their website is https://www.mrmaple.com .I like the odder looking maples. Mostly everyone has some form of weeping red or tall red and green. I saw one that was variegated once. I think I am going to have to get one to add to my rare plant garden. :D

The only thing I could add is be VERY careful of hardiness for your zone. I have tried a couple of them that suffered tip die off every year. They were both Coral barks if I remember and were supposed to be hardy but watch closely

I have griseums (sp) that have way cool bark but I really don't know if they are a native... mmm I guess I will look into that. :?
