hemlock and magnolia trees

HI...I want to have three hemlocks and one magnolia removed from my yard and then plant other trees within nearby areas, perhaps a redbud or weeping cherry or dogwood. How far away from where original trees are do I need to dig for the new trees? Understand Hemlocks have shallow roots and was told I should not plant anything else within 6 feet of the places where the trees were....is that true?

Why are you removing hemlocks? They are beautiful unless they have gotten to large and removing a magnolia and replace with a redbud? They have semi-dwarf redbuds so you add to the primarily white blooming magnolia and have contrast. Six feet should be fine but you'll find out soon enough. I would say ten and you would be better off.
