Protecting tree sprouts from pedestrian trampling

We recently planted five mimosa pudica on the North side of the house in an eight foot section between the road and sidewalk. I marked the trees with short stakes to avoid moving them over. After watering them once or twice a week they seemed to be doing grandly.

However this morning two of the trees had been trampled, and a third was trampled a week ago. One of the trees is defiantly beyond recovery. Can anyone give me suggestions at to how I can protect these trees sort of putting bamboo pikes around the base of the trees?

Thanks,

Seth

I'm thinking a little fence that you can buy at local nurseries will do the trick.
