plum tree cutting help ;S

hi all

never been a huge green fingered person meself, but starting to be. Dad has been doing a bit of gardening over the past few years and asked me if I knew anything about cuttings, abd I know nothing:), he has a few trees and bushes, one being a plum tree (not really sure what type of plum tree it is, I just know it grows plums hehe)

From what I've managed to read up about it I plan to do the following:

1) Cut a 12" end of a branch off, at a 45 degree angle.

2) Remove the bottom half of the leaves/buds, but leave the rest on the top half

3) dip the cut end in root hormone (I've read honey works too?)

4) submerge the cutting in a pot with a good potting soil and perlite (50/50)

5) wait for it to root

how does that sound? don't really want to start hacking away at me dads tree until I think it has a decent chance of rooting - don't think he would appretiate it much!

from my understanding, you might have better luck with hardwood cuttings taken when dormant - february or so. if buds are breaking (or threatening), it might be too late this year.
