I'm in the middle of transforming the area directly next to my west facing wall. I'm trying to create a secret type garden, with screening, butterfly attractions and an overhead canopy.
Is there any tree or upright shrub that I could plant within 6 feet of the house? Something columnar would be great, 12-15 foot spread. It obviously needs to provide some sort of a ceiling, but not too dense, and certainly NO berries. My house is a 2-story, but that wall is only about 12 feet in height. The tree or shrub needs to have about 7 feet of clearance underneath for walking under. I don't want any eyes poked out.
Could I plant an Eastern Redbud, or Forest Pansy Redbud that close to my house?
If you need any more information just ask. BTW, zone 5, Cleveland, OH.

How about forming a short pergola walk with one side attached to the wall, and the other side free of supports or supported by uprights. Then you can train clematis or wisteria or some other climber/climbers to grow up the wall and then across the horizontal structure. If you don't follow that bit of garble there's images on google under 'pergola'.
