Is there such a thing a cherry tree with nasty looking thorns like this? The thorns are sharp; one pricked me. They get longer and eventually become branches.
The leaves (not pictured) look very much like the leaves of a black cherry tree. Very young leaves and twigs are red, and they turn normal colors (brownish trunk and green leaves) with age.
Let me know what you think this is.

I have had a few different kinds of cherry trees in my time, but never one that had anything like thorns on it. Has your tree bourn fruit yet?
I understand that plum trees often have thorns. They're in the same family as cherry trees. I've never grown a plum tree, so know little to nothing about them.

This tree has gotten bigger, and now I'm pretty sure it's a hawthorn tree; because it has come to resemble the local hawthorns (thorny "cherry" trees that make brownish crabapple/crabpear-looking fruit).
Oops! Guess I should've shown you guys a picture of the leaves. They still look like cherry leaves to me, but maybe you guys would've been able to tell the difference.
