Stump preservation?

Recently had to take down a very large maple :( (too many dead branches hanging over road and electrical wires), but I would like to use it's stump for a mailbox post. Is there any way to help preserve it? I vaguely remember hearing about some sort of oil? that will soak in and preserve it.

Linseed oil should do the trick. :)

Well that was my thought, but nobody in the local Agway, nurseries, etc. could confirm that.

Thank you much :D

Linseed oil is great stuff. With the combination of oxygen and light the oil molecules more or less join together to form a very resisant and shiny solid surface.
