What to do with my sad, skinny tree?

We have a tree growing where our fence should be in the back yard and need to remove it. I have no idea what kind of tree it is - it looks more like a pole than a tree. It only has a few branches with leaves on top (probably in part because it had ivy growing up on it).

Does anyone know what kind of tree it is? I'm wondering whether we should move it to a sunnier area to give it a chance to grow or get rid of it entirely.

Much thanks.

Generally speaking if you want to thicken the trunk of a tree you want to have more branches down below. So, what I would do is cut the tree about half way up from which should grow a bunch of branches. Boost the soil with some good compost and keep the tree well watered without overwatering it.

Hi Carrie,

I'd love to see a pic of the leaves that are there and the buds if there are any so we can figure out if it's one you want to keep. I just discovered a cherry that had seeded behind a shrub and cut it out. Some trees aren't all that desirable.
