Star Pine Tree

My mom has what we believe to be a star pine tree in her back yard. It is about 40 years old (started in a 5 gallon redwood bucket by my grandmother in the very early 70's) During a recent Rain/wind storm the top 6 ft of the tree (which stands about 40 ft tall or more) broke off. Will the tree continue to grow with the top gone? Does anyone have any recommendations for what should be done to the "new" top? Should we trim all the branches on top to re-sculpt it more like a top? Any information, insight would be a big help.
Thank you in advance.
