Advice on Variety of Tree
We are basically zone 4 up here. I have an area where I want to plant some trees and I would like some advice on variety to fit the location. The area gets full sun. The soil is terrible. Mostly fill and a heavy clay mixture. It is by some new construction and a lot of fill had to be moved in to level the area out. I would like a medium height tree when full grown. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Some trees that are native in your area that tolerate heavy clay soils (and are medium size, full sun) include the tamarack, quaking aspen, willow, all of which are nice trees with good habitat value. Linden tree also is a good tree for clay soil, but at maturity larger than the others, doesn't really qualify as "medium" sized. In the range of large shrubs/small trees there's hawthorne, viburnum, and serviceberry, all of which also are native, tolerate clay soil, and produce fruits/ berries that birds and wildlife like.
Have fun looking them up and seeing what suits you best.
