I have a suspicion that your plant looks horribly like Japanese Knotweed.
If others confirm...then burn it.
It's a plant that is terribly invasive.

Definitely not Japanese knotweed.

The tree in question is not familiar to me, but it's not Fallopia japonica or Polygonum cuspidatum, the two botanical names you can find for Japanese knotweed. The leaf structure is superficially reminiscent, but I believe we are looking at compound leaves with 6 to 7 opposite pairs of leaflets, while the knotweed has simple leaves placed alternately that give the impression of a compound leaf. That zig-zag of the branch on the knotweed is an identifying characteristic not seen on the unknown specimen.

Plus, the flower buds on Josh's plant are not like knotweed at all. I'd love to know what they look like opened up.

It's one I've never seen before, but judging by the branch structure, looks like one I'd be happy to grow. Pretty fine looking form and leaf. Are those flower buds or some kind of seed pods?
