Growing flowering dogwood from seed

I picked some fruit from a flowering dogwood tree the other day here in south Georgia. I would like to plant them inside and have them ready for next spring to plant outside. I have read about keeping the seeds in a refrigerator over the winter and also read about nicking the seeds and planting them in the ground in the fall. My question is, can I nick the seeds and plant them inside in the fall? Will they sprout after planting them or do they still have to overwinter?

How do you think they grow in the wild? Does a squirrel come along and scratch the shell? I'd plant them outside in a good soil and let them do their thing versus raising them inside because the air is dry.
