Currants

Hi There,

We recently purchased an acreage. There are some currant trees there and the previous owner would like to take some clippings from them and transplant at her new location as she is not able to take the entire tree.

What is the best method for clipping and when should she do it?

If the best time to take the clipping is in the fall, how should she store the clippings before replanting?

When should she replant?

Should she transplant into a flower pot first?

Thank you for any suggestions.

You don't indicate where you are but in the US unless I am mistaken the only currants we have are shrubs.

We are located in west central Saskatchewan, Canada. The currants may very well be growing on shrubs versus trees. I'm not certain. She simply indicated that she wanted to know the best time to take a clipping to transplant it. I said I would try to find out.

Sometimes layering works just as well as cuttings if the soil around the parent plant is optimum. I'd layer in the spring.
