umbrella tree help

I have an umbrella tree that is very tall and losing leaves, I haven't moved it or anything. I heard you can prune it but need very detailed directions of how to do that without killing it! Help! I will post a photo asap.

One can cut back a Scheffera as far as seen fit without killing it. Just cut the trunk anywhere above the roots, and it will grow. They will lose leafs and get laggy after a while, so pruning is vital to making it look good.
