magic carpet spirea in trouble!

Hello,
I am new to the gardening scene. We just recently planted 4 magic carpet spirea about a month ago. This week we noticed all but 1 appear to be dying. They have turned brown and are loosing their leaves. I have checked the soil and it is moist but not too moist. We have been watering 2-3 times a week as needed. The only thing that we have done not by the book was spray the plants with hot pepper wax to prevent the rabbits from eating them. We sprayed all of our plants and they are all doing fine except the spirea! Any suggestions? Can they be saved?

If you are new maybe you didn't tamp the backfill hard enough. I always tell people to use the end of their shovel to close any air pockets even after watering the first time. If they started maybe you can tamp it down and keep your fingers crossed that they come back in the spring.
