Japanese Aser leaves are going brown and shrivelling

Hi -please can someone advise. My husband bought me a japanese maple almost a year ago which we've planted in a large pot. It has been happy since then - is positioned near to the house wall which is sheltered and quite shady. A couple of weeks ago I did see some of the leaves looked a bit brown and noticed that it was very dry (despite recent rain) and gave it a good watering. Since then it's got worse and now all the leaves appear to be going brown and crinkly. Can anyone help? Thanks

Woody plants can suffer from overwatering as well as underwatering. Check to see if water is sitting and is there a drainage hole in the bottom? You indicated it is protected but is it in a windy location?

Thanks. Have checked and drainage is fine. Is not in a particularly windy spot (and survived windy conditions last winter).
