My arbor vitaes have been trimmed to nearly nothing

The city is doing an upgrade for the sewer line near our house. This upgrade forced them take out some of our 30+ year old arbor vitaes and trim the ones they were able to leave to nearly nothing. We just bought the house and we are newbies when it comes to plants. Our neighbors are almost sure that the arbor vitaes that are left will not survive. What can we do to nurse them back to good health? Any kind of advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I'm so sorry. I don't know about your trees but my mother needed to replace her septic system. This entailed digging up half her yard. She has a beautiful flowering apple tree that had half of it's roots exposed for about two weeks. Part of the tree even looked dead after they finished.
It lost some branches but it came back to life and flowered beautifully.
