STICKY BRANCHES

What is the stickiness that is on the bottom branches of my spirea? It doesn't seem to be hurting the blooms, but all the bottom branches are losing their leaves.

Have you checked for scale insects, or maybe aphids? I've not grown spirea, but I'm somewhat familiar with it. My grandmother had several large spirea shrubs. Both scale insects and aphids produce a sticky substance called honeydew.

Scale insects look like little dark bumps on the plant. Aphids are most often green, I think, but they come in other colors. I've seen black ones, white ones, and pink ones.
