help with forsythia

We planted eight forsythias along the edge of our back yard. They got over the shock and were doing well for two months. My wife heard somewhere that coffee grounds were good for forsythia, so we went to Starbucks and got a bag. A week after we put the grounds around the root balls, the forsythia are suffering.

I don't know if it's the acidic nature of the coffee grounds or the extreme amount of rain that we've gotten, but the forsythia are looking pretty pathetic.

Any suggestions?

I would be inclined to blame the rain, far more than the coffee grounds. Although the coffee grounds may have increased the pH of the soil somewhat, I don't think the plants would suffer from it. The soil in my yard is acidic, and I had a lovely forsythia for several years. Until one year when we had an extra-rainy winter. That managed to kill it.
