Do you know the name of this tree?

I need help identifying a tree/shrub that I have seen in Florida. It reminds me of a palm. Looks very "tropical". Has very large leaves which are "split". Some leaves are 15 inches long and very wide. The tallest one I have ever seen is aboutt5 feet tall. As I said they produce very large leaves and also something that looks kind of like a banana. The "tree" usually spreads "out" rather than up. The trunk looks thorny and the roots tend to get tangled together near the surface of the ground. Sorry, I don't have a pict.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
