BARK PEELING/DETACHING FROM MAPLE TREE

Please help me. I have a maple tree in my yard that is loosing its bark. does anyone know what is going on with this tree. Please see attached photos. By the way, despite its location neat the swingset, the damage is not the result of kids, etc. That is, except for a peice that was loose and then broken off by my son. Thanks for the help. John

Either an insect infestation or lightening. You should call an arborist and see what they say. Maybe it can be saved, maybe not.

I would second the recommendation to call an arborist. S/he will know whether the tree can be safely left in place, how or whether it can be treated, and so on.
