Help with a nut tree

I just a purchased a house,on the property there is a good sized nut tree,the tree is about 16' tall ,the bark is much darker then other trees.The nuts that are growing look like 1''long green olives.I an thinking hazelnut,pecan?.The other problem is that I noticed a few of the limbs are ozing sap,the tree looks be be strugling a bit,I wonder if it is bugs,or viral,no one has taking care of the property for a long time,what chemical would you recomemend that I can spray,allso would spreading a good ferilizer help,thanks Gene

Depends on the leaf formation but it could be a hickory. I don't believe pecan would fruit in NJ.

hazelnuts are much more shrubby in stature than hickories. if it's a sizeable tree, it's not hazelnut.

Do any of these look like what you have? Compare the leaves, as well as the unripe nuts.

I was thinking walnuts. Pics would be a big help. I agree with Bullthistle, it is unlikely that pecans would fruit in South Jersey but it might be possible over near the shore where the zone is a 7b. English walnuts will tend to have an eliptical fruit but the bark is light colored. lackwal nuts fruit starts out as an eliptical shape then rounds out as it matures and has a dark colored bark. may be a hickory, ther are maybe a half dozed different hickories that might be found in NJ, each with a rather individual nut and quite a range of bark patterns.
