replacing a shade tree

The previous owner of my house in Arkansas cut down a shade tree in the west-facing front yard. The stump is gone, but there is a circle of wood chips that are now compacted. I need some shade there (the summer afternoons can be brutal) and I was going to place a young Chinese tulip poplar to get shade again, but the ground is digable in some areas, but seems to be full of roots in others. I'm worried that I can't manually clear an area large enough for the new tree. Any suggestions?

Use a grub axe or hook a chain to a truck.

Hook a chain to a truck and then to what? Roots underground? The stump is gone so not sure what you mean.

Dig up the ends of the roots that are in your way and chain them to a truck.

This might not work where you are at but I would put a pile of brush there and burn it. You might get lucky and burn out most of the roots and should get rid of the compacted wood chips.
