I bought 8 Emerald Green Arborvitae about 1 year and half ago. Now 4 of them are turning brown from the bottom up. Two are worse than the others. The other 4 seems to be doing well and growing. I started noticing it last fall.
What could be causing this? I don't see any bugs. Can they be saved?
I asked the nursery and they said it could be due to lack of sun. But I feel they do get a lot of sun. THe other 4 seem to be fine.

Ahhh. First day here, and this is exactly what I came for. My cedar hedge is doing poorly too. I only planted it last spring and it's already looking like it won't make it til next spring.
Unlike the ones above, mine are 'dead' up the centres and the top.
Desparate for help before it's too late.

I had two Arborvitae when I moved into this house, and we finally had to have them removed last year.
Although they lasted quite a while (don't know when they were planted, but I've lived here 16 years), the tree guy told us they were planted too close together and didn't get enough circulation around them. Plus we had to constantly fight the honeysuckle that would grow on them from the neighbors behind us.
Maybe they are too close together? Are you sure they don't have bag worms or something like that? Or are they close to any apple trees? I lost one that way; seems like it causes a fungus or something -- can't really remember what it is but they won't do well by apple trees.

I have Emerald Green Arborvitae as well and was told to plant them 4 feet apart to accommodate their final size once they grow up. Until then I have to tolerate some open gaps in the middle but I should eventually have full privacy.
