a closer-up pic of the leaves would help...it does look like stem's pretty woody. my mostly uninformed guess would something more shrub than tree - the leaves look a bit lilac-y...it really grew over the winter? that branching at the top looks like the beginning of a new years' growth, but that would suggest that it was there at least part of the growing season last year.
It's possible it was there since last year. I didn't plant anything in this pot last year. So perhaps something got there we do have squirrels here, but I do also experiment with cuttings!potatoes! wrote:a closer-up pic of the leaves would help...it does look like stem's pretty woody. my mostly uninformed guess would something more shrub than tree - the leaves look a bit lilac-y...it really grew over the winter? that branching at the top looks like the beginning of a new years' growth, but that would suggest that it was there at least part of the growing season last year.

I often find nut trees growing in my outdoor containers, compliments of the squirrels. Usually, they are oaks, or filberts, or walnuts, but this year, I even found a pecan tree!

my main local squirrel-to-garden (or pot) donation is peanuts - someone in the neighborhood feeds the raw ones, but the ground is always so hard when they try to peg that there's never any nuts...
still can't really tell from that pic...the leaves look a little heart-shaped, which originally made me think lilac, but they're still unfolding, right? are there serrations on the edges of the leaves, or is it smooth?

Potatoes, you're probably right. Here's a better picture. I compared the leaves with the other lilac's leaves and they look the same...I think Do Thank you!!! I'll probably come back with more questions!potatoes! wrote:my main local squirrel-to-garden (or pot) donation is peanuts - someone in the neighborhood feeds the raw ones, but the ground is always so hard when they try to peg that there's never any nuts...
