When To Plant a Dawn Redwood

I have a Dawn Redwood that I bought as a tiny shoot (maybe 6" - 8") about 2 years ago. It has grown to about three feet tall (it is in a pot that is about 18" across). While it appears healthy it does not seem to be growing any taller. Am I being impatient, since spring has barely sprung, or should I go ahead and plant it in the ground to see the fast growth I've heard about?

Thanks!

Metasequoia glyptostroboides to my my knowledge is not a fast grower like say a cottonwood but you should transplant it so it doesn't become rootbound and make certain that you amend the soil and add some bonemeal and water properly.
