HI, we want to plant a Yew hedge which is best to buy

bear root, ball root or potted?? we have got to buy quite a few and we arnt sure which ones to get.

If they are small , potted is probably best. Be sure that the roots are not pot bound. Remove one or two from the pot, if a large swiring mass of roots is found, I would avoid.

Bare root will work as seedling stock if they are not kept out of the ground too long. Take care to see roots don't dry out once you recieve them. It would be my druthers to leave them in original packaging and refrigerated until planted.

B & B is ok for larger stock, tho I would prefer "container grown" ( grown out in the pot, not dug and stuck in a pot). When they are lifted in the field and B&Bd inevitably a considerable amount of the root system is left in the field.

Take some time to study up on the various varieties or cultivars of yew available. They each have a certain form they grow to. Some are better for hedges that others. Some prefer to spread out.
