Bark falling off my tree

I have a tree that got hit with spider mites when I moved in last year. It made some buds at the end of fall even after all the leaves fell off mid-summer. Now most of the bark is falling off the trunk. However, I clipped a tree branch, it looked nice and moist.

The bark falling off in strips makes me think it's toast? Is that accurate to say?

Many trees have "exfoliating" bark - sycamores, river birch, paper bark maple, and so on. Bark peeling from a redbud or other tree that normally keeps it can be bad. How about a picture? Mites can get on almost anything so that may not have anything to do with the shedding...
