I have a fairly large ceanothus at home, and having been away for a year and come back in January, I gave into temptation and pruned it then instead of waiting. It was a little over crowded but not in dire need of a prune.
Some of its leave have started to go brown and it looks a little thinner in the middle. I'm hoping it will be ok when it gets a bit more heat and light in spring and summer, but was curious to see what other thought.
Many thanks Everyone
