Unknown Plant - Shrub or Herbaceous?

Can anyone name me this plant please. Don't know if it is a shrub or herbaceous. Photo taken August.

The leaves remind me of oak trees, but I don't have an idea other than that.

Can you look at the stems? Are they green or brown?

Apparently not. I'm doing this for a gardening friend and he took the picture away from his home.
