Can anyone tell me what kind of tree this is? I'm in western NYS, and the flowers are now beginning to fall off (May 7). I can't recall for sure, but I don't think it has any berries or anything in the fall.
It was planted around 2006, I cut it down probably 10 years ago and it came back. I think I'll keep it this time.
It’s Eastern Redbud (Cercis Canadensis), a North American native tree.
It’s a very useful tree, medium height 25~30ft at full maturity, understory to taller oaks and maples. Dainty blossoms as you have there. Bees love them, the blossoms are actually edible as salad garnish and you can make cordials and jelly with them - if they are safe from toxic chemicals and pollution.
They are also favored by some songbirds.
They are tree nitrogen fixers like legumes and help feed other surrounding trees and shrubs so it’s good to plant in a grouping.
The flowers are typically followed by bean-like pods, and they do self seed — I have volunteer baby trees everywhere. But are easy to recognize by the heart-shaped leaves. The seeds are also eaten by/feed wildlife.
