Dirt-Free Or Soil-less Potting Mix

I've grown tomato plants in a lava rock based mix, similar to some of the recommendations on the bonsai boards here at this site. I've found that they will grow slowly but surely, demand a lot more attention to consistent watering, and require extra minerals & nutrients through a fertilizer of some sort. Mine were significantly smaller than their counterparts in the garden; I think this is common to container grown tomato plants. But they did grow and bear fruit.
